Episode 40: Why Grad School - Intro to Master's Degree

Blanca
Aileen
Chris

In this episode, Luz chats with fellow first generation college students about what their experience was like to apply and attend graduate school for a master’s program, how they decided that a graduate degree was right for them, and how it plays into their long term personal and professional goals.

In this episode you will hear from:

  • College student and masters degree applicant Blanca who will be graduating from undergrad this year and has been admitted to a masters degree program for higher education and student affairs. She tells us about what her experience was like to apply to grad school and provides lots of useful tips for those thinking about starting that process.

  • Current masters degree student Aileen who first went into the workforce but has now gone back to school and has been doing her engineering masters part-time while still working full time as a consultant. Aileen explains how the expectations and curriculum of grad school differ from her undergrad experience and how what she’s learning in grad school has filled some gaps and allowed her to think more critically.

  • Masters degree graduate Chris who earned a masters in accounting through a combined 5-year bachelors and masters program at his school after realizing how it lined up with his career goals and how feasible it could be for him. Graduate school gave him the opportunity to really learn how to advocate for himself, take up the space he deserved, and provided a clear pathway to his career.

As you’ll hear from our guests, deciding on whether to go to grad school is a personal decision that involves self reflection, consideration of how it plays into your long term personal and professional goals, and research to find the program that is right for you and potential funding. It’s a decision that involves planning, networking, and asking for help. It’s an education that can provide more critical thinking skills and an opportunity for career advancement. You get out of it what you put in.
