In this episode, Norma chats with Edgar about his educational and professional journey as a first generation college student. The episode begins with differentiating between a mentor, sponsor, and coach and then Edgar provides examples of how he was able to leverage these support systems in various stages of his life.

In this episode you will hear from:

  • Edgar who was born in Mexico and grew up in California. In this episode, he discusses the importance and differences of mentors, sponsors, and coaches. As a young student, he had mentors who guided him to become one of the first ones in his family to attend college. In his career in business, he had many sponsorswho advocated for his career progression and then he really harnessed the power of a coach to help me pivot careers and take more risks.

The questions for our first gen college students becomes: do you know what you need and who you need to help you in your next step in your first gen journey?
