Episode 50: The AAPI Identity and Model Minority Myth
In this episode Mijin chats with high school student Steph, first gen college student Donna, and post-college student Kacia about the experiences of AAPI first gen students and the model minority myth.
In this episode you will hear from:
Steph, a high school student and proud Filipina living in Illinois who is applying to college as a first gen student. Steph moved to the US when she was 14 and not only adapted to life in the US as a first generation immigrant, but also learned to renavigate her life while journeying through her new sense of identity.
Donna, a first generation college student who is attending University of Houston. Donna talks about her experience as an AAPI first gen student during the times of COVID and how stereotypes cannot fully represent nor help understand any group of people or individuals.
Kacia, a first generation post-college student who attended University of Pennsylvania. Kacia candidly speaks on her experience growing up in a predominantly hispanic neighborhood with not many AAPI peers then going to college and meeting various AAPI students and minoring in Asian Studies and how those experiences have helped her learn more about her own identity and the AAPI community at large.
For AAPI first gens who are interested in learning more about the AAPI identity and how to get further engaged in the social discourse on race, we thought the below organizations might be a good place to start:
Asian American Leadership, Empowerment, and Development for Youth and Families (AALEAD)
National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD)
