Episode 85: Transferring to an HBCU

In this episode, Luz chats with How to College: First Gen’s intern Destiny, a  first gen student about the experience of attending a historically black college/university (HBCU) and how she decided that she needed to transfer out of her previous school into one that provided what she needed to excel.

In this episode you will hear from:

  • Destiny, a current college student who began her college journey at a private predominantly white institution (PWI) but soon realized that the atmosphere of the school was not conducive to her getting the most out of her education. She soon after decided to transfer schools to a historically black college/university (HBCU) where she has found a supportive community that is challenging her and helping her grow as a student.

Your college experience can be largely affected by the school you choose to attend and choosing to transfer schools to better fit what you are looking for in a school is certainly an option. Different kinds of schools offer varying resources and social opportunities so it’s important to take a moment to reflect on what it is you need from your school to help you grow, prosper, and feel welcomed as you get through your studies. It is important to do your research, visit schools if you can, and get informed so that you know what to expect from the school you might want to attend.
